Sunflower Painting

I was painting recently in North Branford in the middle of a beautiful acre of sunflowers when a wonderful photographer asked if he could take my picture. I said yes, then thought to ask him to email me a copy. Here it is. The photographer is Dennis Beaulieu. I love the photo, thanks, Dennis! Here are the two paintings that I did there, each on different days.

 They are both oil on canvas over panel, 9"x12".
The sunflowers were simply gorgeous this year, and the fields stopped traffic for quite a long time.
Sunflowers are fun to paint. The rich oranges and yellows really stand out against the cool green leaves and blue sky.

Large Sunflower Paintings

I have been wanting to do some large paintings of sunflowers for a while now. The flowers here were pieced together from photographs, which I don't normally do. It was the only way to get the look that I wanted, though. I also tried using gallery wrapped canvas, which is great fun. Both are large, 30" x 24".

I will be having a show at the Woodbridge Town Library on November 10th from 12:00 to 3:00 pm. These and sixteen other new paintings will be on exhibit. All are welcome. The exhibit will be on view throughout the month of November.

Christmas Bouquet

I received this bouquet as a gift from my cousin, Lisa, who is a premier floral designer. It was so gorgeous, I had to paint it before it withered away. It was fun to use luscious reds and oranges right out of the tube. There was some great reflected light that carried the warm color to the surrounding objects.

This was painted from life in my studio.

Flower Pots

Here's a still life that I did while studying under Jack Keledjian. The pots sit on a table just above eye level. Jack's influence was more in the initial laydown of values, warm colors, and composition. I rather like the blue pot with its color variations.
